Okay........ Super Mario 64 is overrated and I don't think it's very good. WHAT??? Yes, I know this game revolutionized 3D gaming and jumpstarted the 3D platforming genre, but I feel that's all this title contributed to the gaming world.
Where do I start. Why is it that the first two worlds have boss battles and yet the rest of the game doesn't have any more (not including the Bowser bosses which are all the same!) It's amazing how everyone finds the overworld so great and nostalgic but really you can't do anything but transport to worlds. Sunshine's overworld had more things to do, but people can't stop talking about how bad Sunshine is compared to Mario 64. This word isn't used much in gaming, but Mario 64 is inconsistent. The first two worlds are great, then for while it gets old and tiresome, and then it's a good level. Speaking which of Sunshine, everyone says Sunshine's camera is awful, but Mario 64 is even worse. If it's so revolutionary, why can't I control the camera all the time?
But the real problem, this game is just not enjoyable. And Mario basiclly lives by enjoyable and easy to get into games. For the first true 3D platformer, this game should have been linear. I wanted this game to be Super Mario Bros in 3D, not Zelda (sort of). But no, the game isn't very fun and is hard to get into. It is quite an accomplishment when I get a star because I was able to go through crap that I didn't care for.
You know what this is? People aren't taking off the nostalgia glasses. I never accuse people of doing that, but this is crazy. The moment you click on a video of the top 10 N64 games or even top 100 games of all time, you should expect to see Super Mario 64 #2-#1 and #5 on the lists. Super Mario Galaxy is the real deal. That game is what you call a masterpiece. But that is another blog.
I'm going to be honest with you, I just don't get it. Really, Super Mario 64 is a masterpiece?
