2-D shooters are one of my favorite gaming genres around. In case you're not exactly sure, a 2-D shooter is those classic games like Galaga, Gradius, and R-Type. So when Screwattack (a gaming media website) creates a list of the top 10 2-D shooters, I felt that list was heavily flawed. The list is as follows
10. Xevious (arcades) 9. Raptor: Call of the Shadow (PC. Don't ask, I never had heard of that game either.) 8. 1943 (NES) 7. Asteroids (arcade) 6. Axelay (SNES) 5. Galaga (arcade) 4. Super R-Type (SNES) 3. Gradius 5 (PS2) 2. Ikaruga (arcade, Gamecube) 1. U.N Squadron (SNES)
I agree with Asteroids and Galaga because those are amazing arcade classics. What's up with number 10. Xevious should not even be in the top 20. There isn't anything about that game that is special. Most people would disagree, but I don't think any R-Type game is a top ten 2-D shooter. However that's just my opinion. I've never played Ikaruga, but everyone talks about it all the time. It does look creative with its color switching mechanic. But for me, I don't think it would be any better than the classic shooters like Galaga and Centipede. By the way, this game is missing so many great games. Hey Screwattack, did you try out M.U.S.H.A, Centipede, Life Force, Blazing Lazers? Heck, those four games right there are probably my top four 2-D shooters (with M.U.S.H.A being my favorite). This list screams out revising.
Although I believe this is a flawed list, everyone's list of the top 10 2-D shooters will most likely be very different. I say that because there are a boatload of great games in that particular genre. I'm sure there are even great ones that I can't think of off the top of my head. Other lists like the top N64 games, you automatically know that #2 is Super Mario 64 (which doesn't belong anywhere near the top 10) and #1 is Ocarina of Time. But with 2-D shooters, it's any games spot. I look forward to seeing other top 10 lists.
